The Best Bohemian & Alternative Wedding Dresses in Surrey

Papillon_2019_Eva_afront.jpg

It’s no secret that in our boutique we like a bit of colour and dresses that have a little bit of ‘je ne sais quoi’ about them. Colours, patterns, textures - it’s all good and all very welcome in our Surrey bridal shop. When we first decided to launch BRIDE by Aster in spring 2018, we knew that we wanted to have a great variety of dresses. All shapes, textures, colours, patterns. Designers you have never heard of from all over the world who don’t necessarily follow the bridal trends.

If I’m honest, my personal style is more bohemian, floaty and whimsical, but I have such a massive appreciation for design and adore ballgowns and mermaid dresses alike. Here are a list of my TOP 10 BEST BOHEMIAN WEDDING DRESSES currently available in our Surrey bridal boutique.

In no particular order, here we go…

EVELYN

EVELYN is a dramatic trumpet lace gown in a stunning shade of nude with a beautiful contemporary vintage style lace covering the whole dress. Her detailing is exquisite and she is formal yet relaxed, romantic, soft and truly striking. EVELYN by Modeca can be dressed up or down, but we love her for a boho wedding in Surrey, with rustic flowers and a symphony of colour.

ESMEE

One of our most dramatic wedding dresses in store is ESMEE by Modeca. She is a magnificently unique wedding dress in shades of ink black and layers of ivory, complimented with navy blue lace applique. Her overall effect is sometimes navy and sometimes grey; that’s the beauty of her, you can never quite tell! The lace applique are made from exquisite sculpted birds as well as romantic florals. If you want a statement wedding dress, ESMEE could be the one!

ATHENS

The true meaning of ‘boho’ comes out to play in our gown ATHENS by Anny Lin. She shimmers and moves like a fairy, has the most uniquely detailed bodice we’ve ever seen, and has the most delicious lace skirt that floats in the breeze. Her skirt and bodice have a layer of champagne tuille to add warmth and colour and to make the delicate lace stand out in ivory. Not convinced? She comes with signature see-through pockets! Game. Set. Match.

FLEUR

Fancy making an entrance to end them all? FLEUR is your dress. Stiflingly beautiful in an abundance of pink and purple florals printed onto a raw silk skirt, FLEUR is finished off with a hand embelssihed bodice and skirt using Swarovski crystals. Her bodice has visible corsetry which is bang on trend, and her sheer back is perfection. She has a super long train and packs the ultimate fairytale punch!

ELEANORA

A favourite wedding dress in our Surrey based bridal shop is ELEANORA. She is a quintessential fairytale ballgown in shades of pink, blue and ivory, giving her an overall shade of lavender. She has floral appliques accented with shades of champagne, salmon and petrol blue and has so many delicious layers of the softest and most indulgent tuille, she could very well be fattening.

DEMETRIA

Floaty, feminine, understated, a little bot of lace, no sparkles and totally dreamy, DEMETRIA by Modeca is the epitome of bohemian elegance. Throw on a flower crown and a pair of fabulous boots or sandals and you’re ready for the aisle! DEMETRIA has gorgeous lace straps, a sexy plunging neckline, exquisite low back and a beautiful sheer lack waistband. The pleated chiffon is hopelessly feminine and chic and she is one of our favourites!

EMMA

One of the most delicious colours for a wedding dress in 2020 is mocha. It is rich, warm, romantic and so bohemian I could cry. EMMA by Modeca has large lace applique detailing and a fitted lace bodice over a delicious mocha gown. There are two layers of lace adding another dimension to this intricate gown and it’s train is understated and so elegant.

EVA

Long sleeves, pink, lace, low back…..EVA by Modeca is a bohemian dream come true! She is a stunning shade of mink below her layers of warm ivory tuille and is detailed with pink, champagne and ivory applique flowers. She has a plunging mink bodice that is discreetly covered with the most delicate lace and her back plunges to a deep V to reveal a little skin.

ARIEL

Another totally unique Anny Lin creation, ARIEL is truly one of a kind. She sparkles in a shade of champagne, has the most glorious back detailing I think I’ve ever seen on any dress AND she has wings! For a truly unique, totally fairytale wedding dress, ARIEL could be the one for you!

EDEN

EDEN by Modeca has an altogether vintage bohemian feel. She is effortless, chic, glamorous yet totally relaxed. Her incredible elbow length sleeves are pure indulgence and her unique patterning make her one truly to be rivalled with. Make EDEN vintage with a gatsby style headpiece or truly bohemian with a savage flower crown!

Hannah's Favourite Hotel Venues in Surrey & Sussex

pennyhill.jpg park.jpg

This last year since we opened our doors has been a complete whirlwind. From opening within 6 weeks of deciding to take the plunge, to meeting hundreds of new people (designers and couples alike) 2018-19 has so far been one of my favourites!

With such an incredible response to our boutique, our unique dresses and our warm and truly personable approach, has come an overwhelming amount of support. Brides and their families and friends have championed us, industry friends have given us their full support and in turn, venues have taken us on board as their preferred suppliers. It truly has been a sensational 14 months!

After the popularity of our last post about our favourite barn venues in and around Surrey and Sussex, I wanted to share my top picks for hotel venues across the same counties! Hotels are great for couples with lots of family and friends coming from afar. They normally have the ability to host ceremonies onsite and with bedrooms for guests before the big day and the night of, it makes planning all the more easy!

For wedding dresses in Surrey, we have definitely got you covered. We are, as it currently stands (and long may it continue), the most highly rated bridal boutique in Surrey and on the borders of West Sussex. But for wedding venues, we can point you in the right direction and wish you well! Below are my top hotel picks for your big day! ENJOY!

SURREY

From the impressive driveway through this estate, nestled in beautiful Betchworth, to the glorious facade and sprawling grounds, Hartsfield Manor wedding venue offers the most wonderful dichotomy. Wotton House Hotel

Truly one of Surrey’s most magnificent hotel wedding venues, Wotton House Hotel is a stone’s throw away from our bridal shop, just on the outskirts of Dorking. It’s gardens are so impressive, they are Grade I listed and that’s before you step foot inside the venue. A long and winding driveway offers an enticing build up to the striking facade of the building. The Old Library, the most surprising and unique suite inside Wotton House is beyond breathtaking. Use this space for your ceremony and/or wedding breakfast before heading out for drinks in the sweeping grounds.

Kingswood Golf Club

Kingswood will always have a special place in my heart. It’s where I ‘grew up’ in essence. I started working here at the age of 21, just after I finished university and finally took a leap of faith and left almost 7 years later. The venue has such a warm charm to it and is light, bright and airy with sweeping views over the manicured gardens and course. It doesn’t have a typical ‘old world’ golf club style and instead has neutral decor and the most beautiful ballroom with crystal chandeliers for your civil ceremony. The Lodge, is a purpose built luxury boutique hotel built on the grounds of the golf club. It is plush and modern with beautiful facilities and just enough bedrooms for your nearest and dearest as well as two killer bridal suites. Choose from the suite with the balcony that looks over the grounds or the ‘James Bond’ room which is an extensive suite complete with bath tub big enough for two, a dining table, a King sized bed (plus an extra double bed that comes out from the wall, just in case you want to stretch your legs!)

Designed to host wedding ceremonies, wedding breakfasts and evening receptions, the Sky Lounge’s versatility means it can be designated for your personal use for the duration of your wedding to host and entertain guests. The main barn where you can have your civil ceremony and it’s quite frankly exquisite. A truly magnificent barn that is perfect for couples looking for a little rustic glamour. There is a glass conservatory that has been lovingly added to the main barn, leading out to a courtyard area which is truly quaint. There are other buildings dotted around the courtyard including the main office space that is so in-keeping with the style of the property, you would think it was a little annex. There is also a wonderful cottage where guests can stay overnight to extend the celebrations. It is utterly charming and has a very traditional style.

Has bridal fashion been inspired by Meghan Markle & Princess Eugenie?

Meghan Markle & Princess Eugenie Wedding Dress Inspiration…

One of the most common questions asked when guests arrive to our boutique is “do you think the royal weddings have influenced bridal fashion”? In a very simple word – yes. When we first opened our boutique in April 2018, there was hardly any demand for super sleek and simple gowns in mikado or satin.

Six months later in the autumn and into winter, there has been a huge change in bridal fashion, I believe inspired by our two beautiful members of the royal family, Meghan and Eugenie. Markle’s simple Givenchy wedding dress was demure and elegant from head to toe in a figure-hugging fabric that showed her lean and statuesque figure with full sleeves. Her evening gown for her reception was also a simple gown with clean lines and crisp finish. It was a glorious halter neck that made a statement feature of her beautiful shoulders and slim figure.

Her stunning tiara and extra extra long veil has also inspired our designers to up their ‘sparkle’ game and we’ve been seeing an increase in popularity for BIG tiaras as well as new ranges of veils that are now available in ‘abbey’ length to rival Markle’s exquisite veil. They are over 3ft longer than the cathedral veils we stock so definitely pack a punch!

Eugenie wore a stunning satin off the shoulder gown with a gloriously long train and again it had full sleeves. I think this has certainly inspired the next year of bridal fashion as brides aren’t afraid to have a little more train than they may have normally chosen. Interestingly, Eugenie chose not to have a veil and instead gave all the attention to an awe-inspiring emerald tiara, a loan from her majesty – how kind!

I also think it made a lot of us look back to Kate’s wedding dress when she married Prince William back in 2014 and remember how drop dread gorgeous her gown was designed by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen. The long lace sleeves, plunging neckline and exquisite skirt and train. The world fell in love with her style all over again! Kate’s evening gown was also to die for, again in simple satin accessorised with a beautiful long-sleeved angora shrug.

Our wedding dress shop in Surrey is now know for having a very varied selection of gowns, all different from one another and these include some gowns inspired by our Duchess and Princess. Our wedding dress designers Modeca, Ella Rosa and Phil Collins all have some gorgeous bridal gowns that embody simplicity and are truly stunning and effortless. You can see some of the designs we carry below in the royal gallery!

A lot of girls also have a preference for some sort of sleeve or strap on their wedding dress. Strapless gowns have a beautiful and clean finish but 90% of our brides prefer a little more coverage, just like the royals. We carry a range of dresses with wide straps, off the shoulder straps, thin delicate beaded straps and illusion necklines as well as strapless dresses.

As we offer completely private appointments for our brides and their tribes, with a fun yet relaxed and completely no-pressure environment, we are recommended at some of Surrey, Sussex and London’s most beautiful venues that are fit for a royal occasion! Winter Weddings at Wotton House...

Lots of couples choose to get married in the summertime. There’s always a hope for glorious long sunny days, Pimms on the lawn and having the opportunity to be outside for lots of photos. But if you’re like me and LOVE the romance, intimacy and cosiness of a winter wedding, it’s a great time to start looking for inspiration on how to achieve a beautifully styled celebration that reflects your personality and makes the most out of the season of giving.

9ab3ee73ad098c2e48a317f39c83e510.jpg

We are the exclusive recommended bridal boutique for Wotton House in Surrey and we’re celebrating that with ‘Wotton Week’ on the blog and on social media. Therefore, we have chosen to take Wotton House under the microscope and pick out some of the key features of this exquisite Surrey wedding venue and suggest some options on how to create an effortlessly magical winter wedding at one of Surrey’s most popular wedding venue.

The Old Library

One of Surrey’s most enchanting ceremony spaces that truly defies belief. In itself, the deep wooden floors, dramatic pillars and vaulted stone ceilings already create a feeling of warmth and cosiness. We recommend accentuating this with an abundance of oversized candles lining the aisle with lots of fake snow sitting beneath. Not big on candles? How about large hurricane vases filed with bundles of fairy lights? Or even tall water filled lily vases with a small LED light in the bottom that changes colour and a floating candle on top?

Photography by Be Unveiled Dress and Cape by BRIDE by Aster

Photography by Be Unveiled

Dress and Cape by BRIDE by Aster

Atmospheric lighting on the pillars and fairy lights is always a great way of really adding depth and atmosphere to a space and you could even add some moving lights to the ceiling and walls to project the illusion of falling snowflakes!

Make people feel as if they walked into a winter wedding and instead of chiavari chairs, why not hire in wooden benches and dress with faux fur throws and blankets. Instead of fresh and structured floral arrangements, opt for loose and wild foliage with hardy winter flowers and pops of dark burgundy, navy blue and shots of ivory for crispness.

de-vere-wott-20170213043254905.jpg

The Dress

A winter wedding doesn’t mean you need to dress as if you’re going on an exploration of the arctic. But it does mean that you might want to consider a sleeve or some sort of warm accessory to your ensemble to ensure that when you do go outside for photographs, you’re nice and toasty. Thankfully, we‘ve got you covered (get it?)

Choose from our unique collection of stunning dresses including full length and tea length wedding dresses in our Surrey bridal shop. We have dresses with long sleeves and short sleeves, fur wraps and long sleeve lace boleros. We also have our gorgeous capelets that can be added to a lot of different dresses for a little variety.

The Evelyn Suite

This beautiful wedding suite is light, bright, classy and elegant. It lends itself perfectly to icy blue and snowy silver colour palettes with injections of gold and pastel pinks. However, as the room itself is fairly neutral, it could certainly take a darker and stronger colour palette such as burgundy and navy or forest green and copper. Flowers by Elaine are partially included in Wotton House wedding packages and they have such an amazing variety of centrepieces to choose from to create your signature look.

Whichever colour palette you settle for, accentuate with lots of candles and soft lighting. Turn the lights down in the ceiling and add extra lighting to the tables and uplight the walls in soft shades and warm tones. This brings in the atmosphere and makes everything feel so much cosier.

Wedding Theme Advice - your ‘theme’ is not the same as your colour scheme. For example, your ‘theme’ cannot be ‘blue’. That means, that anything that is blue could feature in your wedding and this can lead to a very confused and non-cohesive style. Choose a few words that best describe the look and feel you are trying to achieve AND choose a colour palette. You will find that you eliminate or include things based on these titles and end up with something far more cohesive. An example of this would be ‘enchanted winter woodland’ and ‘copper, ivory, navy blue’. Taking these into consideration, you will begin to avoid anything that does not fit the brief of a woodland themed wedding and in turn, you will end up with a very clear and finished decorative look.

The Roman Temple

Let’s be honest. You’re probably not going to have your reception outside between the months of October and March. However, that doesn’t mean that you should avoid the stunning grounds at Wotton. On the contrary! Winter creates some of the most emotive lighting, the most dramatic and tempestuous skies and the most turbulent winds. Get your welly boots and/or umbrella and get outside for some unforgettable photos! The Roman Temple, also known as the Turtle House, is simply magnificent and should be frequented for photos all year round as well as Wotton’s stunning grade II listed Italian gardens.

Whatever the weather at your winter wedding, embrace the dwindling light, the endless possible alcoholic hot chocolate combinations you can create on your bespoke hot choc station (Bailey’s for me) and the romance and ‘togetherness’ that the season so effortlessly commands. We can’t wait to see more of our brides winter wedding photos at this stunning Surrey venue.
